Being Still vs Being Silent

I have never been one that sits well with being quiet.  The effort that is required for me to stop talking is far greater than some of my family and friends, although possibly not my sisters!!  Others seem to be able to sit quite happily in silence for significant periods of time, but I need even a little bit of noise around me to help me focus better.

Some time ago I was studying a unit in Spiritual Formation and during the classes we would have a number of visiting lecturers.  Without fail each one would insist that as we start that day’s class we would spend the first 10 or so minutes in silent prayer and meditation.

While I don’t mind prayer I did find the constant push for silence quite challenging.  Others were able to feel centred and connected, but there were a few of us who felt distracted, disadvantaged and disconnected.

I know that the Bible asks us to be still before the Lord, and often people interpret that to mean silent.  I, however, believe that ‘being still’ means that I need to stop doing, for when I am still I am allowing God to be in control.  (Exodus 14:14)

This is incredibly easier to say than to do, and when I am reminded to let Him be in control I am not always settled and comfortable with the idea. I am not advocating that there should never be times of silence, but there are others ways to be ‘still’ before that Lord that allow some noise.

It is good to challenge our normal practices but it is also good to know that our personal preference for connection is legitimate also.  It is also really helpful to recognise that others are different to you and what you may like.

God made each of us different and wants us to enjoy his presence in a multitude of ways.  He knows what both you and I need to connect well with Him and he knows that because he knew us before we were born.  (Psalm 139)

So when next you are asked to be still, spare a thought for those of us that need some noise in life – perhaps you could suggest some gentle music in the background on our behalf!

Be blessed.
