My African Quilt

I started this quilt in 2009 as part of a Medallion Quilt class run at my favourite, now defunct, quilt store – Quilter’s Bazaar in Gisborne, Victoria.

The central image is made from 4 panels of an African animals themed range of fabric I found in Spotlight. The remainder of the panels are included in the back of the quilt.

Each border was added to practice a set method and using mathematical calculations that would help send astronauts to space! It gave me an opportunity to utilise some of the African themed fabric I had collected over the years.

The back of the quilt was pieced using leftover fabric as well as other pieces that didn’t make it into the quilt top.

I hired the long arm quilting machine from Lesley May’s Patchwork Shop in Mildura to do an all over quilting design in a tribal theme using a variegated thread and thoroughly enjoyed the experience and all the encouragement from the staff there.

I was so pleased to have finished this long term UFO after 9 years. I am proud of how this project turned out, despite my constant delaying tactics out of fear of making a mistake.
